Cadence Reader
Privacy: what Cadence Reader reads, and what it never does
Applies to Cadence Reader for Chrome and the Cadence Reader desktop app. Last updated 8 October 2026.
Only when you ask
The extension touches a page only after you click its icon, use its right-click menu or press its shortcut. If you switch on the optional "Read" bubble, Chrome asks your permission first, and the bubble only appears when you select text. It never reads password boxes or form fields.
Page text stays on your computer
Text is normally spoken with your browser's or computer's own voices, and Cadence doesn't receive it. If your Cadence default is your personal voice, only the sentences you choose to hear are sent to Cadence's voice service to be spoken, and the audio is saved to your account so replays are free. Pages are never analysed, sold or shared.
Your Cadence account
If you connect the extension, Cadence gives it a key that can only read your Reading & Voice settings (voice, speed and reading options). It never receives your password or your Cadence session, can't see your notes, courses or progress, and can't change anything. Disconnect any time in Settings → Reading & Voice; the key stops working immediately.
Google Docs and PDFs
Google Docs doesn't expose its text to extensions, so to read your selection Cadence asks Docs to copy it, reads it and then puts your previous clipboard back where your browser allows. PDFs are opened in the extension's own reader page only when you choose "Open in Cadence Reader"; the file is processed on your computer.
Stored on your computer
Your speed, chosen voice, connection key and whether the bubble is on. Removing the extension deletes them.
